Implications for the Future: A Call for Deep Change

The geological reality is sobering. Mark Anderson, an adjunct geology professor at South Dakota Mines, warns that the current trend is unsustainable. “When we’ve had years of successive below-average precipitation, wells demonstrate significant water level decline,” Anderson says. “The warming temperatures are essentially acting as a multiplier on the lack of rain.”

The implications for the Black Hills region are profound:

  1. Economic Strain on Ranching: The cost of hauling water is eating into the margins of agricultural operations. For many, the cost of keeping livestock alive is becoming higher than the market value of the animals, forcing difficult decisions about herd liquidation.

They are preparing for a bill that could easily reach tens of thousands of dollars, a necessity they never envisioned when they settled on their land.

Until that well is drilled, Gordon Howie will continue his twice-weekly trek to the J&J Asphalt spigot. He will climb the ladder, insert his bills, and watch the water flow into his trailer with the precision of a man who knows exactly how much every drop costs.

“I let every last dribble go in,” he says. “Those cattle have got to have water. We all have to have water. In this country, that’s the only thing that really matters.”

As summer wanes, the residents of western South Dakota remain caught in a cycle of drought and dependence. The crisis of 2026 serves as a stark reminder that even in the modern age, the prosperity of the plains remains fundamentally, and sometimes brutally, dependent on the water beneath our feet.
